Different Types of Wirehaired Dachshunds

A dachshund comes in three basic coat varieties: Smooth, wirehaired and longhaired. Each of these types also fits different size classifications: standard, mini and toy. The features that differentiate the wirehaired dachshund from other types is the thick, coarse outer coat, except for the jaws, ears and eyebrows, which have smoother hair.
  1. Standard Dachshund

    • A dachshund of standard size weighs in at about 11 pounds upon reaching 12 months of age and reaches a height of 8 to 11 inches. Dachshunds typically have extra hairs extending from the brows and jawline, like a beard. Some typical faults a standard dachshunds may have include a flag tail, a lack of undercoat or hair that is atypically smooth or erratic.

    Mini Dachshund

    • A mini dachshund is typically 5 to 7 inches in height and weigh in at 11 pounds or less. Take note that the standard and mini size are recognized by the American Kennel Club, yet the European Kennel Club also recognizes the toy variety, which typically weighs in up to 8 pounds and be up to 8 inches in height.

    Wild Boar

    • Dachshunds come in many different color varieties, with wild boar being among the most common. Wild boar is a blend of brown, tan and black, with hairs of the coat banding together that creates a textured effect typical of wire-haired dachshunds. Nose, nails and the area around the eyes are black. This type of coloration can also be found on smooth-haired Dachshunds, but it is not common.

    Other Colors and Types

    • In terms of size, wirehaired dachshunds are also categorized by unofficial categories by breeders, such as dwarf, tweenie, teacup and micro-mini, yet these types are not recognized by kennel clubs. Other colorations include red boar, red sable, chocolate-and-tan, cream, and black-and-cream. Cream dachshunds are light strawberry blond in color, which is a lighter color than red boar.
