Barking Breeds
-
Terriers (Yorkshire, Cairn and West Highland) are among the biggest barkers. Terriers originally were bred for hunting vermin and are likely to be snappish, too. The toy and miniature poodle and the Chihuahua breeds are the next class of dogs most likely to bark at unapproved times. The Shetland sheepdog and Irish setter are among the few of the larger breeds known to be big barkers. The bloodhound and golden retriever are breeds that bark the least. And, basenjis actually are barkless.
Barking Triggers
-
Properly socialized and trained dogs are less likely to bark unexpectedly or in excess. An environmental stimulus, such as an unexpected knock on the door, can startle your dog just as it does you and thus elicit a perfectly natural alarm bark. Properly socializing your dog with both humans and animals introduces your dog to common sites and sounds and reduces alarm barking. Routine training teaches your dog basic commands. Positive reinforcement teaches your dog what actions are allowed.
Unmet Needs
-
Another reason for excessive barking is the dog attempting to communicate unmet needs such as hunger, thirst or anxiousness. A poor diet lacking in essential nutrients does not satisfy your dog̵7;s nutritional needs. Dogs confined to small areas with little room to exercise or those left outside alone can bark out of boredom. Implementing a quality diet and exercise routine is effective in curbing unwanted barking behaviors in all breeds. Teaching your dog when to bark can limit the need to bark, even at appropriate times.
Considerations
-
Before adopting or purchasing a puppy or dog, take a moment to observe the dog in its natural environment before approaching it. What is the dog's body language? Does is bark a few times to say hello or does it bark incessantly, which can be a sign of problems down the road. Barking dogs are a potential point of conflict with neighbors. If you have a barking dog, tell your neighbors you are working to correct the behavior and appreciate their patience. Never use abusive, cruel or inhuman methods, such as yelling or hitting, to quiet your dog. Patience and a committed routine of care will serve you and your dog's best interest.
