How to Groom Cowlicks on a Dog

A show coat quality is attained by daily grooming with the right brushes and combs. It is equally important to be aware of the type of stroke you perform while brushing your dog̵7;s hair. Cowlicks are unsightly and stand out on an otherwise well-groomed coat. Before shaving the cowlick from your dog̵7;s hair, use grooming techniques to retrain an untamed coat into one that shows off your dog.

Instructions

    • 1

Use correct brushes according to your dog̵7;s coat type, to remove soil and disperse oils. Using an incorrect brush causes the hair to lay improperly due to frizzing, or not cleaning out the undercoat thoroughly.

    • 2

Brush your dog̵7;s coat in long, flat strokes without flipping your wrist up. If you do, this causes the coat to flip up at the tips, making cowlicks worse.

    • 3

Use the correct type of combs, based on your dog̵7;s coat type, to remove undercoats, tangles and mats. The coarser the dog̵7;s hair, the wider the teeth should be on the comb.

Use coat conditioner spray between baths and during groomings, to keep hair and follicles clean and well-hydrated.

    • 5

Comb the top line of the cowlick flat and lay a moist towel over the cowlick as you groom the rest of the dog during grooming sessions.
