How to Keep the Hair From Matting on a Golden Doodle

A golden doodle is a mixed-breed dog that is the result of breeding a golden retriever with a poodle. Golden doodles are generally about the size of a standard poodle, although they do get to up to 2 feet tall and 75 pounds. A mid-length fur breed, a golden doodle's coat can grow up to 8 inches long if left uncut and can form clumps or mats in the fur. Frequent grooming and regular trimmings can help keep mats from forming in a golden doodle's fur.

Instructions

    • 1

Brush your golden doodle using a slicker brush, which is designed to cut through small mats in a dog's fur. Use a detangling comb for clumps that are unable to be removed by using the slicker brush.

    • 2

Cut through any remaining clumps with a mat rake, if possible. Switch back to the detangling comb and grab any remaining mats between the teeth of the comb. Cut the mat just below the surface of the comb. Brush your golden doodle again with the slicker brush.

Cut your golden doodle's coat to an even, short length on all parts of its coat using electric dog grooming clippers. Use the 1-inch length clipper guide comb attachment, snapping it into place over the blade.

    • 4

Cut your golden doodle's fur, starting on the back, to about a 1-inch length. Cut the fur in the direction of growth. Repeat for the sides, legs, chest, neck and top of the head. Use scissors to trim the tail, base of the tail and around the face.

Brush your golden doodle at least twice per week using the slicker brush to remove any loose fur and keep tangles from forming. Use clippers to cut your golden doodle's fur every two or three months, which will also help eliminate clumps from forming.
