How to Groom a Pembrook Welsh Corgi

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi has a full, double coat that is relatively low maintenance. The coat of the breed varies, but is usually medium length and includes feathering, or longer hairs on the pants and chest. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi changes its coat twice a year and during this period daily brushing is required to prevent the dead and shedding hairs from matting. Some shorter coats can be brushed every two weeks or even every month, but a weekly brush is not only good quality time with your dog but will remove dirt and prevent matting.

Instructions

    • 1

Comb through the dog's coat to remove any shedding hair or knots.

    • 2

Wash the dog with a dog shampoo and conditioner. Towel dry or blow dry the hair. The dog should be bathed once a month at the most. The Corgi's coat is naturally waterproofed so it does not need frequent bathing.

    • 3

Brush the dog's entire coat with the slicker brush. Part the hair to reach the the thick inner coat and brush to the very end of the outer coat.

    • 4

Trim away fly away hairs on the feathered pants and chest if desired. The trim is meant to make the natural lines neat and not cut the hair shorter. Show dogs should not be trimmed at all as their coat is judged in its natural state.

Use damp cotton balls to remove dirt and wax from the dog's ears. Swipe the inside of the ear with the cotton ball over your finger. Do not push too hard or stuff the cotton ball down the ear canal.
