How to Treat a Dog's Dandruff With Coconut Oil

Similar to a person, a dog's skin cells are constantly being replaced; old, dead skin is shed and replaced by new skin. An irregular cell-replacement cycle can make the skin dry, and cause it to flake. Improper grooming, low humidity and a poor diet all influence the health of your dog's coat and skin. Condition your dog's skin with coconut oil to combat dandruff and keep its skin supple and healthy.

Instructions

    • 1

Brush your dog's coat thoroughly to remove any tangles and mats.

    • 2

Apply coconut oil to your dog's skin. Pour some of the oil on your clean hands. Rub your hands together and massage it into your dog's skin. Apply the oil little by little to avoid over-saturating the dog's coat. Cover your dog's entire body, especially areas prone to dandruff, such as the back, rump and neck area.

    • 3

Blot your dog's coat with paper towels to soak up any excess oil. Wait 24 hours so the oil can work into your dog's skin.

Give your dog a bath. Saturate your dog's coat with warm water and lather dog shampoo over the coat. Avoid using human shampoo because this may be too harsh on your dog's skin. Use a medicated dandruff shampoo for dogs or a regular dog shampoo. Thoroughly rinse the coat with warm water to remove all traces of shampoo and oil. Pat your dog's coat dry with a towel. Allow your dog's coat to air dry or use a hair dryer on cool to dry it.
