How to Groom the Head of the Schnauzer

The giant, standard and miniature schnauzer all have a very distinct groom style. The schnauzer cut defines the aristocratic look of the breed and exaggerates its eyebrows and beard. The schnauzer cut is so iconic of the breed that most schnauzers, whether they are show dogs or not, have the schnauzer groom on the head even if they don't have the full style on the body. The cut includes precise cutting and angles with both scissors and clippers.

Instructions

Using the clippers, clip the top of the head starting from just before the eyebrows to in between the ears and down the neck. Use a smaller clipper attachment or beard trimmer to clip in between the eyes from the inner corner of each eye in a diagonal line to the top of the head, forming a triangle shape in between the eyes.

    • 2

Pull the ear back and clip from the top of the head, past the base of the ear and down the cheek to the jaw line. Leave the eyebrows untouched.

    • 3

Start at the base of the muzzle and clip underneath the neck. Do not clip the beard.

    • 4

Comb the beard parted in the middle and trim flyaway hairs with scissors.

    • 5

Comb the eyebrows forward and cut a diagonal line from the inside corner of the eye to the outer corner of the eye. The eyebrows remain long at the inside corner of the eye and are shorter on the outer corner so that the dog can see.

    • 6

Clip the back of the ears and trim any longer hairs on the sides of the ears.
