How to Maintain Your Poodle's Coat

Caring for a poodle's coat is in many ways similar to caring for your own hair. Poodles have a single coat of hair that grows with minimal shedding. The delicate and curly hair grows quickly and can get very long and tangled. The coat needs daily brushing to prevent matting and mild hair products to prevent breakage. The poodle requires quite a significant amount of grooming time and special products. Maintaining a healthy coat is part and parcel with maintaining a healthy and happy poodle.

Instructions

    • 1

Bathe the poodle a minimum of once every two weeks and preferably once a week. Comb out the dog's coat before washing to prevent matting.

    • 2

Mix a mild dog shampoo with water and distribute evenly through the coat. Massage the shampoo into the hair and rinse thoroughly. Use a dog conditioner to keep hair healthy and moisturized.

    • 3

Blow-dry the coat while brushing with a pin brush to remove tangles. Use a poodle antistatic spray or finishing spray while drying to prevent split ends and static.

Brush a poodle every day with a slicker brush. Part the hair if it is longer to ensure you brush from the roots to the ends of the hair. Brushing stimulates blood circulation in the skin and removes dead or shedding hair that would otherwise form mats. Even if the dog has short hair it needs a quick brush every day.
