How to Groom a Pomeranian With a Teddy-Bear Cut

The Pomeranian is an energetic toy dog with a fluffy appearance. Pomeranians have a thick, double coat that requires regular brushing. If you're unable to come up with the necessary grooming time, you can give your Pomeranian the practical "teddy-bear cut," also known as the "puppy cut." This cut preserves the fluffy look in the head area and tail, but shortens the coat on the body so it won't need extensive grooming.

Instructions

    • 1

Sprinkle water on your Pomeranian's coat or, if the coat is matted, use a detangler spray. Brush your pet to eliminate any dirt and debris caught up in its fur. Should you find matted fur, take each tangle apart with your fingers and a steel comb. Remove all tangles; because tangled fur is difficult to clip, it may cause your dog discomfort.

    • 2

Wash your Pomeranian. Spread shampoo evenly on its fur and rinse carefully. Using a conditioner is optional, but if you do, make sure you remove it all when you rinse.

    • 3

Towel-dry your dog or use a dryer. If you opt for the dryer, use a low setting to avoid burning your Pom's skin.

    • 4

Clip the hair on your dog's body using a No. 10 blade and clippers. The teddy-bear cut involves leaving the hair one-half-inch-long on the body, but you may select a different length. Adjust the size of the blade according to the length you prefer. Clip with the grain of the hair to avoid ripping the skin or injuring your Pom.

    • 5

Shape the dog's tail using thinning shears. Pomeranians are known for their fluffy tails so, even if shortening the hair on the rest of the body, leave the tail at its regular length.

    • 6

Trim the hair that grows between the pads on the feet. Use a pair of blunt-nosed scissors to avoid injuring them.

    • 7

Brush the hair surrounding your dog's head and face completely forward. The aim is to create a faultless circle of fur surrounding the face. Use scissors to shape the hair and remove any strays.
