How to Get Mats Out of a Labradoodle With a Comb

Labradoodles are known for their golden, curly hair. Since they have thick, curled hair, these dogs require constant brushing and grooming to prevent tangling. When hair becomes tangled and mats of fur form, the clumps of fur can pull on the dog's skin, causing pain. Fur mats can be removed by gently combing the mats free.

Instructions

Locate mats in the labradoodle's hair and open a pair of grooming scissors. Hook one end of the scissors under the mat between the skin and the matted fur. Cut the mat lengthwise in the direction of the fur's growth.

Repeat the process and cut several lengthwise strips into the mat. Don't tug or yank at the matted fur.

    • 3

Grip the mat's base with one hand and use a double-toothed comb to free hair from the clump, beginning with the end of the hair, working toward the dog's body. Pick at hair with the comb; do not pull.

Apply emollient leave-in conditioners for dog grooming if the mats are too difficult to comb. Let stand a few minutes and begin working the comb through the hair again, a few strands at a time. If the mats cannot be removed, take your dog to a groomer and have the hair shaved.

Comb the dog's entire body once mats are removed; this can prevent further clumping. Brush the dog several times a week to prevent further matting. Use leave-in conditioners regularly to keep hair soft and smooth, preventing further tangles.
