How to Groom a Poodle's Legs

A popular breed, the poodle is endowed with a coat that can grow to more than 8 inches in length. As a poodle owner, you can explore your creativity by grooming this beautiful dog in a variety of different styles, from the simple to the exotic. However you choose to groom your poodle, ensure that its legs are clipped in the same style. You should groom your poodle̵7;s legs every month to remove excess hair that can mar its appearance and prevent mats from forming.

Instructions

    • 1

Bathe your poodle and thoroughly dry it prior to grooming the legs. Bathing removes dirt and loosens knots and matted fur, making it easy for you to groom the legs.

    • 2

Comb the hair on the legs and flanks in a downward direction. Gently run a steel comb or slicker brush through the hairs on each leg to reveal excess hairs or mats. Brush through the mats to untangle and remove them. Cut out mats that are difficult to remove with blunt-edged scissors.

    • 3

Position the scissor straight across the pastern, or the narrow ridge area above the paws, and trim uneven hair ends uniformly all around it.

    • 4

Hold your poodle̵7;s leg up with one hand, firmly but gently. Place the scissors along the inside of the flank and trim the hair in this area in a straight vertical line. Repeat the trim with rest of the legs.
