How to Groom Long Haired Show Dogs

If you own a long-haired dog with whom you're interested in competing in dog shows, it is imperative that she be properly groomed. Such long-haired show dogs as Shih Tzus, Bichon Frises and Lhasa Apsos require a great deal more grooming than your average canine. By acquiring the proper grooming products and having the right styling tools on hand, you can make your pooch stand out and help her attract the attention of even the most discerning dog show judges.

Instructions

    • 1

Lightly spray your dog's coat, with the exception of its facial fur, with a high quality grooming spray. This will help keep your dog's coat shiny and prevent split ends and breakage.

    • 2

Brush your dog's fur on a consistent basis. Go over your dog's entire coat, save for its face, with a pin brush on a daily or bi-daily basis.

    • 3

Comb your dog's fur. Follow up every brushing by going over your dog's coat, once again skipping the face, with a rotating tooth comb. This will help prevent matting.

Go over your dog's facial fur with a fine-toothed flea comb. Do this before or after every brushing.

    • 5

Wipe your dog's eyes with a soft handkerchief on a daily basis. This will effectively prevent excessive mucus buildup.

    • 6

Trim your dog's toenails bi-monthly with a pair of canine nail clippers. This task is best performed when the dog is relaxed. If your pooch has problems holding still for nail trimmings, consider taking her to a professional groomer.

Bathe your dog on a weekly basis. Make sure to use a canine shampoo that is designed specifically for long-haired dogs.
