How to Care for a Bulldog That Sheds Hair

One look at a bulldog's short and smooth coat and some automatically assume that the dog does not shed, or perhaps sheds just a few short hairs around the house. The problem, however, is not that bulldogs lose hair; it is rather that their short dagger-like hairs stick into everything from upholstery to clothing and are difficult to remove. The hairs are like little magnets and are so short and light that they travel easily and stick to every corner of the home. While there's no way to stop a bulldog from shedding, you can try to control where and when the hairs fall out through a routine of frequent grooming.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a grooming glove on the dog daily or every other day to remove loose and dead hairs.

    • 2

Vigorously brush the coat with a soft-bristled brush once a week to stimulate the blood flow to the skin and keep the coat healthy. Brush the coat more often during the high shedding periods when the dog is changing coats in the spring and fall.

    • 3

Check for skin infections such as ringworm or mange, redness or bald spots in the coat to see if excessive shedding may be caused by skin problems or allergies. Medication or an adjustment in diet may reduce excessive shedding.
