Pekingese Hair Care

Pekingese require regular grooming. Caring for this breed̵7;s fur takes effort in order to prevent matting and tangles that can hurt your dog if they grow too large. Regular brushing, as well as properly bathing and drying your Pekingese ensures that its fur is well taken care of. Once you understand the correct grooming techniques required to maintain your dog̵7;s fur, the task becomes easier and often enjoyable.
  1. Brushing

    • Pekingese require daily brushing. This breed features longer, silky fur that easily tangles if it is not brushed frequently. Gently brush the dog with a pin brush. Pekingese have sensitive skin that easily scratches if you use a sharp bristled brush. Brush the dog̵7;s fur down to the skin. Gently remove any tangles or knots in the fur. Once the hair feels silky and smooth, add volume to the fur by brushing it in the opposite direction that it grows. When you brush the dog̵7;s fur, look for any cuts on the skin. Twigs can easily become stuck in the fur. Remove any twigs and look for scratches. If you do not take care of cuts or scratches on your Pekingese when you see them, they can get infected.

    Bathing

    • Pekingese do not require frequent bathing. Bathe your dog every two weeks to keep it clean. You must bathe Pekingese with a pH-balanced shampoo so the dog̵7;s skin is not stripped of essential oils. After shampooing, you must thoroughly rinse the dog. If shampoo stays on the dog̵7;s skin, it can irritate the skin and cause a rash. Let the fur completely dry before you brush your dog. Spraying your dog̵7;s fur with a gentle de-tangling spray after bathing helps keep the fur silky. Using dry shampoo is another option for bathing your Pekingese.

    Trimming

    • Shaving is not a requirement for Pekingese grooming. Typically, the fur is kept long. However, with male Pekingese, you must carefully trim around the groin area every few weeks. Keeping the groin area trimmed keeps it sanitary. Male Pekingese that do not have a properly trimmed groin area tend to smell like urine, as well.

    Face Care

    • Face care is also part of caring for your Pekingese̵7;s fur. You must carefully wash the fur on and around the face with a warm wet cloth and a little shampoo. Dry shampoo is also ideal for cleaning face fur. Pekingese get tear stains under the eyes. Tear stain wipes will help eliminate the smell, as well as the stains. If the fur around the eyes needs trimming, use blunt nosed scissors. Only trim a little fur off at a time.
