How to Groom a Maltese & Pug Mix

Grooming a dog involves more than dunking it in the bathtub and soaping up its fur. Each breed requires specific grooming and care depending on the thickness, length and texture of the fur. A Maltese and Pug mix can manifest with a number of trait combinations, but the hair is typically of medium length with a smooth texture. These intelligent and loyal dogs are known to sit tight and deal with grooming procedures, making your job easier.

Instructions

    • 1

Spritz detangling spray across your dog's fur. Comb down to the undercoat, and then up and out through the overcoat to remove dead hairs. Finish by brushing with the slicker brush, then hand-plucking out the remaining loose hairs.

    • 2

Fill your bathtub with a shallow pool of warm water. Put your dog in the water and pour warm water over its body with a plastic cup, getting the fur completely wet. Avoid getting water in the dog's eyes.

    • 3

Massage mild soap into the dog's fur, making sure to work the soap into the undercoat and on the legs and head. Avoid getting soap in the eyes. Rinse the soap out by pouring warm water over the fur with a plastic cup.

    • 4

Dry your dog with a towel. Blow-dry the fur for a fluffier appearance, or let the fur air-dry.

    • 5

Clip the white and gray area of your dog's nails if they've grown long. Leave a small amount of nail where the white part meets the pinkish red part. Cutting past this part on the nail will result in discomfort and bleeding. If you have only a small amount of nail to get rid of, file the nail down gently.

    • 6

Brush your dog's teeth at least twice a week. Use dog toothpaste and a dog toothbrush for comfort and safety.

    • 7

Gently rub a cotton swab across the shallow parts of your dog's ear to remove dirt and debris. Do not insert the cotton swab into the ear canal. Clip away longer hairs surrounding the ear with shears.
