How to Groom With Clippers

Using electric dog grooming clippers is a quick way to groom your dog's coat to the shape and length that you want. Any fine detail, such as around the eyes and ears, can be done using a comb and scissors. Some long-haired breeds of dog only need a slight trim, while others need to be fully cut, such as during the heat of summer. Bathing, drying and brushing your dog's coat needs to be done before you can begin cutting the hair with electric dog grooming clippers.

Instructions

    • 1

Bathe your dog and towel dry it completely. Brush the hair in the direction of its growth with a slicker brush.

    • 2

Remove and tangle or matted using a deshedding comb. Use scissors in conjunction with the comb to cut away any matted hair that cannot be removed by the comb alone.

    • 3

Use electric dog grooming clippers equipped with a long clipper gate attachment to cut along the length of hair around the neck and back initially, then work your way down the sides and the legs.

    • 4

Be cautious when trimming around the face, eyes and base of the tail. Use scissors to rim around the tail area, removing any extraneous hairs.

    • 5

Trim any bangs or fall over the eyes, unless the breed's normal cut, such as certain terriers, dictates otherwise. Use scissors or the smallest clipper gate attached to the electric clippers to trim the hair around the face and chin. Shape the facial hair cut using scissors.

    • 6

Run your hand over the dogs coat and locate any unevenness to the cut. Trim away extraneous hares using the scissors.

    • 7

Brush the dog's coat gain, if any length of coat remains, to remove any leftover hair clippings.
