How to Trim a Dog's Whiskers

A dog's whiskers are an important part of its sensory system. They project away from its body and alert the dog to close collisions. When the whiskers are stimulated, a dog sometimes paws its nose, turns its head or closes its eyes. Whiskers are especially important for hunting dogs. Dogs do not benefit from the trimming of their whiskers. An owner who decides to trim his dog's whiskers begins with his pet facing him.

Instructions

    • 1

Give your dog the "sit" command. Praise it. Sit facing your dog. Hold its muzzle with one hand.

    • 2

Pull your dog's upper lip toward you with your other hand. This is your dog's flew. Place your blunt-nosed, small scissors at the base of the first whisker. Start at either side off your dog's snout.

    • 3

Continue cutting each whisker along the flew individually. Smile and talk to your dog while doing this.

    • 4

Release your dog from sit. Cradle its head in your lap. Hold its muzzle with one hand.

    • 5

Cut the fine whiskers around the lip, nose, chin, throat, eyebrows and cheeks. Give your dog a treat when you are finished.
