Supplies You'll Need to Groom a Welsh Terrier

The Welsh Terrier is a small dog that requires significant grooming care to maintain its beauty. Originally the Welsh Terrier, or Welshie, was bred to hunt foxes, badgers and otters, but few people use this dog as a hunter today. According to Dogtime, this Terrier is high strung and gets into trouble because of its personality. Maintaining the cleanliness of the Terrier, therefore, requires special attention and certain grooming supplies.
  1. Comb And Brush

    • A Welsh Terrier's hair is wiry on the outside of the coat and softer as it gets closer to the skin. Since the longer hair is wiry, use a wide-toothed comb to straighten the hair. After removing the dead hairs with a comb or by hand, use a brush to handle the softer hair. Use a softer bristled brush so you do not irritate the skin of the Welshie. Comb and brush the dog two to three times a week to keep the coat soft and shiny.

    Shampoo

    • Ensure you have the correct dog shampoo for your Welsh Terrier. Each type of shampoo has a different formula of chemicals for the different types of dog hair. Since a Welsh Terrier has a broken coat, or a mix of smooth and wiry hair, the shampoo must contain vitamin E. This vitamin ensures the health of the Welshie's coat. Do not use too much shampoo when washing the dog, as doing so removes the natural oils in the hairs of the Terrier. Shampoo the Terrier as needed.

    Toenail Clippers

    • Use dog toenail clippers to groom the paws of the Welshie. Dog toenail clippers are different than human clippers, because the blade slides when the handles are pressed together. Slip the end of the clippers over the nail and press the handles together, sliding the blade across the face. Clip the Terrier's toenails approximately once every two weeks.

    Wash Cloth

    • Add a wash cloth to your Welsh Terrier grooming supplies kit to clean the eyes of the dog. Check your Terrier's eyes on a daily basis to prevent dirt, debris and bacteria from building up within the eyes. Take a damp wash cloth and wipe the eyes anytime you see debris building up around the eyes. You can also use the wash cloth to clean the ears of the Welshie once a week.

    Electric Clippers and Scissors

    • Electric clippers are essential in keeping your Welsh Terrier's coat clean and properly groomed. Remember that the longer hairs are wiry, so cut the Welshie's hair about twice a year. Some Welsh Terrier owners prefer to hand-pluck their dogs and use straight-edge scissors to cut the Terrier's hair. Either choice is appropriate as long as you perform it twice a year. However, you will need a pair of scissors to trim around the Terrier's ears, face and private parts.

    Toothbrush and Scraper

    • Dog Behavior Training states that 80 percent of dogs aged three years old develop gum disease because their teeth are not brushed. Get a dog toothbrush, toothpaste and scraper to clean your Welsh Terrier's teeth. Brush the teeth in a circular motion and along the gums of the Terrier. Use the scraper to remove any plaque or debris. Brush the dog's teeth regularly.
