How to Eliminate Tear Stains in Dogs

Many different things can cause your dog to develop tear stains, including genetics, diet, lifestyle and certain health conditions. It is important to check with your dog's veterinarian if the dog has tear stains. Your vet may be able to treat some conditions that cause tear stains. That being said, regardless of what is causing your dog's tear stains, you can get rid of them with regular grooming.

Things You'll Need

  • 1/4 cup hydrogen peroxide
  • 1/4 cup milk of magnesia
  • Bowl
  • Spoon
  • Rubber gloves
  • Cornstarch
  • Soft-bristle toothbrush
  • Washcloth

Instructions

      Pour 1/4 cup of hydrogen peroxide and 1/4 cup of milk of magnesia in a bowl. Use a spoon to stir the two ingredients together until they are completely blended.

      Add cornstarch one spoonful at a time into the mixture. Keep adding in cornstarch until you have made a paste.

      Put on a pair of rubber gloves. Get a dab of the paste on the tip of your finger. Apply the paste to the tear stains on your dog. Do not get the paste in your dog's eyes or nose.

      Allow the paste to dry. Do not leave your dog unattended during this time or he may scratch, lick or rub at the paste.

      Brush away the paste with a soft-bristle toothbrush. Wipe the area with a clean, damp washcloth.
