How to Cut a Boy Yorkie's Hair at Home

Yorkshire terriers have a silky, flat coat capable of growing beyond the height of the dog. Rather than allowing the coat to become matted or fighting to keep a strict grooming schedule, many Yorkie owners cut their boy Yorkie's hair into short styles that maximize the dog's comfort and reduce coat maintenance. Having a few grooming essentials at home can reduce grooming costs as well as keep your boy Yorkie in a manageable coat length.

Instructions

  1. Setup

    • 1

Place the grooming mat on the upright grooming table to prevent slipping.

    • 2

Adjust the grooming loop so that it comfortably keeps the dog in a standing position without placing any pressure against the underside of the neck.

    • 3

Lay the scissors, wire-pin brush and comb where they are within easy reach.

    • 4

Fill your pocket with treats or place them in an easy location within your reach only.

    Getting Started

    • 5

Place the dog onto the grooming table, slip the loop around his neck and offer him a treat.

    • 6

Begin working at the neckline and trim the dog's coat to the desired length. A standard puppy cut is one inch, but some owners will allow up to two or three depending on preference.

    • 7

Cut hair in sections such as the neck first followed by the head, the front legs and chest, the back and underbelly and the back legs and tail.

    • 8

Offer a treat to the dog after cutting each section to reinforce good behavior.

    • 9

Brush the dog free from loose hair, offer a treat and slip the grooming loop off his head.
