How to Scissor a Drop Coat

A drop coat is a dog̵7;s coat that is allowed to grow to its natural full length. Typically, this length is floor-length or longer. Many show dogs have drop coats, and some dog shows for certain breeds require the dog to have a drop coat. If you have a drop coat dog, there is little trimming necessary for hair grooming. However, you can use scissors on the coat to trim split ends and help the hair have an even appearance.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the hair with warm water and shampoo. Follow the washing with a moisturizing conditioner. Rinse out the conditioner with cool water.

    • 2

Blot up as much water as possible from the coat with towels. Gently blot the hair dry and do not rub the hair.

    • 3

Comb through the hair with a dog comb to remove any large tangles.

    • 4

Dry the hair with the low heat setting. Leave the hair partially damp.

    • 5

Brush through the hair with the brush. Brush the hair into the desired position on the dog̵7;s body.

    • 6

Trim the bottom edges of the hair with the scissors. Work slowly and cut in a straight line for best results. Trim the bottom of the face, the tail and the ears using this method. Do not cut enough of the hair so that it no longer touches the ground, if possible.

Remove all split ends to help preserve the integrity of each hair strand.
