Do Doberman Pinschers Shed a Lot?

Doberman pinschers are not known to shed a lot. In fact, they have a more or less maintenance-free coat. Their coat is short and very easy to wash, and it dries quite fast after a bath. However, ensuring that your dog has a shiny and healthy coat does require some amount of grooming on a weekly basis.
  1. Weekly Grooming

    • While a Doberman pinscher does not shed a lot, it requires weekly grooming. This breed has an overcoat that is semi-rough and an undercoat that is soft. The breed needs combing for a few minutes to remove dead hair from the soft undercoat. Otherwise, the dead hair may result in mats and contribute to shedding. Use a shedding blade to remove dead hair that has not shed yet. This will ensure that the hair does not shed and then stick to your clothing and furniture. Brush your dog well to remove dirt and debris from the fur.

    Bathing

    • Bathe your Doberman pinscher every two months. This breed does not have the characteristic dog odor, and hence, even if you delay the bath for a couple of weeks, it will not make a difference. Most Dobermans love to take a bath, and you should not face a problem while bathing your pet. Use a dog shampoo with conditioner to keep your dog smelling fresh and clean. Do not use human shampoo on your Doberman, as the pH of the shampoo is not right for dogs and could lead to skin allergy or irritation.

How to Bathe a Doberman Pinscher

    • Before wetting the dog, plug the ears with some cotton. This will prevent water from getting into the ears. Start with the paws. Rinse them well and then begin with the body. Use your hands to squeeze out water from the coat. Usually, this will help get rid of any loose hair and dirt. Wet the coat again, and apply the dog shampoo, lathering it well. Rinse the shampoo out completely. Dry the coat with a towel and allow the dog to air-dry for an hour.

    Dry Bath

    • If you do not have the time to bathe your Doberman, then dust some baking soda onto the coat. Work the baking soda into the coat using your fingers and then brush of the excess. This will keep your dog's coat looking clean and fresh until you find the time to administer a full bath. It will also help to get rid of any loose or dead hair.
