How to Make My Maltese's Hair Less Curly

A Maltese is a short dog that can grow really long hair. If left alone, the Maltese's hair becomes wavy and matted. If you brush all the hair out after a bath while applying the blow dryer, the hair will become silky straight. A pin brush lets the air reach the hair while you are brushing it straight. The straight hair will last until the next shampoo as long as you maintain it with daily brushing and combing.

Instructions

    • 1

Shampoo your maltese's hair with a dog shampoo. The shampoo is formulated so it won't hurt the eyes. Rinse well.

    • 2

Apply a conditioner to your dog's hair, work it in well and rinse. This can be a conditioner for human hair. It will make the dog's hair smooth and make it easier to remove tangles.

    • 3

Remove the dog from the tub and let it shake out excess water from its hair. Pat it down with a towel.

    • 4

Begin brushing the dog's hair with a pin brush, starting from the front right quadrant and working your way around the dog clockwise. Brush in 1-by-1-inch sections, removing all tangles as you brush.

    • 5

Brush out a tangle by holding the hair close to the skin so you don't hurt the dog. Stop brushing. Work any hair you can out of the tangle. Snip the remainder of the tangle out with a pair of scissors.

    • 6

Blow dry the hair after you have finished brushing out all the sections. Hold the blow dryer in one hand and the brush in the other. Blow dry as you are brushing. If the hair is getting dry, wet it with a spray bottle of water.

    • 7

After you are finished blow drying the hair, comb it through with a dog comb to make it smooth.

    • 8

Spray the dog's hair with a detangler and brush or comb it through every day.
