Clipping Styles for a Schnauzer

Schnauzers are small dogs with rectangular heads. The snout ends abruptly. The look of the schnauzer will be the same regardless of how the groomer clips the schnauzer, except the coat color and texture. When choosing how to trim this dog, groomers can choose a convenient method or use an approach that will trim the schnauzer in accordance with breed standards.
  1. Shaving

    • Electric clipping is the easiest way to clip the Schnauzer. The more the groomer presses on the schnauzer, the more hair the groomer will shave off the dog. Some groomers choose to shave the schnauzer close to the skin to extend the time between each grooming.

    Cleaning

    • Groomers clipping with blades should first wash the schnauzer and should never cut dirty hair. After washing, the groomer should brush or blow the fur dry, brushing leg hair in an upward direction. The beard, eyebrows and chest should be brushed downward.

    Overall Body Clipping

    • Groomers often lay the clipper flatly and move it lightly with the grain of the fur. They start with the base of the skull when using clippers and move slowly with the hair lay, traveling towards the tail. The groomer must be more carefully when trimming the hair in between the pads on the schnauzer's feet. The groomer should carefully scissor or clip the hair with a 40 size blade and should trim the legs in a circle until she achieves the desired look.

    Coat Thickness

    • The schnauzer should be brushed so it has no knots before it is groomed, which can interfere with the look of the coat afterward and pulls the dog's fur, causing pain. Thinner coated dogs need a 7F sized blade, while thicker coats need a 10 sized blade. Groomers smoothly stroke with the lay of the fur. The groomer should start from the top and move the blade downward. The groomer must be careful around the elbow and shouldn't cut too deeply into the fur.

    Sensitive Areas

    • 30 sized blades and a clipper are idea for the rear and underside of the tail. When clipping the belly, groomers must be very careful near the genitalia. The 40-sized blade is best for the area near the ears.

    Head

    • Schnauzer heads should be trimmed to look rectangular. Before trimming the eyebrows, use a comb to brush the eyebrows forward. The groomer should first trim the outer edge of the eyebrow. Then, the groomer combs the hair forward again and puts the scissors against the side of the head, behind the corner of the eye. The groomer points the blade tip to the center of the nose and then makes a smooth cut. The inside of the ears are best trimmed using tweezers and ear powder. The groomer should be careful when pulling the hairs, since the groomer can cause irritation.
