How to Remove Hair From Inside My Golden Doodle's Ears

The Golden Doodle is a hybrid (mixed breed) cross between the Golden Retriever and Poodle. It is in the genetics of both dogs to have long ear hair, especially if the stronger gene is that of the Poodle. The inner ear of your Golden Doodle should be "hair free." When there is hair inside the ear, air does not properly circulate through the ear canal. This results in wax blockage and inner-ear moisture, which contributes to inner-ear infections.

Instructions

    • 1
Standard poodles are especially prone to ear infections.

Fold back the ears of your Golden Doodle, so that the inner ear is exposed.

    • 2

Sprinkle a small amount of pet ear powder into the ear. The goal is to lightly dust the area of the ear from which you want to remove hair. Using too much will "gunk" up the ear. Use the powder sparingly.

    • 3

Use your fingers to pull the hair from your Golden Doodle's ear. It is okay to pull a few strands at a time. If there is no existing ear infection, this will not hurt your dog. If, however, the ear is inflamed and infected, this process can be excruciatingly painful. Therefore, clear up any instant infection before removing ear hair.

For hairs that are hard to reach, use a pair of tweezers or a hemostat. Only pluck hairs that are visible to the naked eye. If you go any deeper to reach the hairs, you risk damaging your pet's ear canal.

    • 5

Wet a cotton ball with hydrogen peroxide. Do not drench the cotton ball, lightly moisten it. Gently wipe the inside of your pet's ear with the cotton ball.

    • 6

Dry the inside of your Doodle's ear. Leaving the ear wet increases the chance for ear infection. Dry using gauze pads, facial tissue or cotton balls.
