Breed Standard Grooming Style
-
The Maltese breed standard for grooming is a long coat that flows to the ground. The hair on the head and face can be tied or pinched with bows to reduce soiling from tear stains. The tail hair can be brushed to its length, or flipped and tied back, to reduce the chance of hair mats. The basic Maltese coat can be maintained by daily brushing in conjunction with a strict grooming schedule.
Puppy Cut
-
Although the puppy cut is not an acceptable showing length, it does reduce the need for extensive grooming and tangles. A puppy cut is similar to the what the Maltese puppy resembles when the dog grows into its first coat. The puppy cut is between 1 and 2 inches long all over, including the tail, mantle, feet and chest. The benefit of the puppy cut is that it allows the dog to move freely.
Groomer Designs
-
Dog groomers have various hairstyles that can be borrowed from other breeds, such as the cuts used for poodles, Yorkshire Terriers and Schnauzers. Groomers can also take requests for designer cuts that are imaginative and creative. When selecting a groomer, always go in a day or two in advance to book your grooming. By visiting the grooming facility, you can establish if they uphold policies such as sanitation and handling of animals, as well as assess if the animals currently being groomed are distressed or uncomfortable.
Basic Grooming Supplies
-
A basic grooming supply kit can also help keep professional grooming costs down by picking up a little extra grooming maintenance at home. Shampoos, conditioners, trimming shears, as well as eye, ear, nail and dental supplies, can be purchased at most pet supply stores. A short cut reduces maintenance time, but does not eliminate the need for basic coat maintenance. The longer the coat, the more coat maintenance is required to prevent mats that can be detrimental to the health of the dog.

Hairstyles & Cuts for a Maltese Dog
The Maltese is an affectionate and well-mannered dog, and has been a companion to aristocrats across the globe. The American Kennel Club calls for the breeds coat to be a long silky white mantle, parted evenly over the back. This breed, unlike many other small breeds, has maintained its same size since before the 1500s. Several grooming styles and cuts are effective in keeping a clean, tangle-free coat.
