Different Haircuts for Pomeranians

The Pomeranian is a toy breed of dog from the Spitz family. It tends to stand around 8- to 11-inches high. The breed is known for its luxurious, fluffy coat, which requires a lot of grooming. Shorter cuts can be beneficial in the summer months, especially if you live in a hot climate. Once you've decided which cut you want for your dog, it's best to get it done by a professional groomer.
  1. Trim

    • A trim haircut for your Pomeranian is a basic tidying of its coat. Your dog's fur will remain long: But the groomer will use scissors to remove the excess hair from your pet's head, around its ears, its ruff, chest, tail, feet and body. They will also shape the areas nicely to emphasize the natural form of the dog. Although this may sound straight forward, you shouldn't attempt it yourself, unless you're an experienced dog groomer.

    Lion Cut

    • The lion cut is half long and half short. The groomer will shave the entire back of your dog's coat to around a 1/4-inch in length, leaving just its tail long. However, the dog's head, neck, chest and shoulders will be left with long hair, to give the appearance of a lion's mane. There are slightly different variations on this style; where just the head and neck -- or just the head, neck and chest are left long.

    Puppy Cut

    • A puppy cut for a Pomeranian is so-called, because it emulates the shorter coat that Pomeranian puppies have. The dog's entire body is trimmed with clippers to somewhere between 1/2 an inch and 1-inch in length. The groomer will normally leave the fur on your dog's face and tail, although they might trim it slightly with scissors to neaten it up. This cut is good for keeping your dog cool.

    Considerations

    • Pomeranians have two layers to their fur -- an undercoat and an outercoat. Clipping your dog may cause it to come back slightly differently, so if you show your dog -- or are planning to do so -- it may be best to stick to just a trim. While you're having your dog's coat cut or trimmed, it's a good time to have its nails trimmed and have its ears wiped out and checked for infection.
