Grooming & Haircuts for Shih-Tzus

According to AKC statistics, shih tzus are among the most popular dog breed, and it's likely that their appearance plays a significant role in their popularity. Shih tzus are known for their long, flowing hairstyles as much as they are for their good temperaments. Notwithstanding, shih tzus require considerable grooming and maintenance. Three particular hairstyles are found on well-groomed shih tzus.
  1. The Show Cut

    • The show cut requires care and diligence to maintain.

The show cut is the most difficult to maintain because all of the dog's hair (both coats) is kept at its full, natural length. Therefore, frequent brushing, detangling and general maintenance are required. The coat is allowed to have slight waves, but must not be curly. The feet, bottom of coat and the anus may be trimmed for neatness but must not be over-trimmed. The hair on top of the dog's head should be tied up.

    The Teddy Bear Cut

    • The teddy bear cut is a mix of ease and elegance.

The teddy bear cut is similar to the puppy cut except the head and face are not trimmed down. They are left at full length. The ears, however, are trimmed slightly, which adds to the teddy bear effect. Since the head hair is left long, top knots and other styles are possible with this haircut.

    The Puppy Cut

    • The puppy cut is the easiest to maintain.

While traditionalists might consider the puppy cut ugly, this cut -- also known as the summer cut -- is by far the easiest to maintain. Simply put, the dog is trimmed so its hair is between 1 and 2 inches long all over. This cut keeps the dog cool in the warmer months, and keep coat maintenance down to regular bathing and brushing.

    General Grooming

    • To groom your shih tzu you need a bristle brush and comb. You will also need a pair of small trimming scissors. If you plan to give your shi tzu a puppy cut or a teady bear cut, then you can use a set of clippers made for dogs. You will also need rubber bands for tying up the hair on its head and for sectioning off masses of hair when brushing if you keep the hair full length. The longer the hair, the more frequently you will have to bathe and brush your shih tzu.
