How to Get Rid of a Poodle's Eye Stain

Many dog breeds develop eye stains, also called tear stains. These are usually reddish brown and develop at the corners of the dog's eyes. These stains can be unsightly on dogs with light-colored fur and are especially common in poodles. Fortunately, it is fairly easy to remove these stains. During removal, keep in mind that your poodle's eyes may be sensitive; use caution when cleaning the area.

Instructions

    • 1

Take your poodle to a veterinarian to determine the cause of the eye stains. While some staining is natural in poodles, an excessive amount can indicate a serious problem such as allergies or clogged tear ducts. If the vet finds your poodle has a health problem, clean existing eye stains before beginning treatment.

Trim the hair near the corners of your poodle's eyes with a small pair of sharp scissors. This keeps the hair from becoming matted. Be very careful when using scissors near your dog's eyes -- ask your veterinarian to do it for you if you are nervous.

    • 3

Clean the stained area twice a day with gentle, unscented baby wipes. This method is most effective when the stains are new and not yet severe. The moisture in the wipes softens any liquid that has crusted and gentle wiping will remove it.

    • 4

Dip a cotton swab or Q-tip in mineral oil and gently swab the area around your poodle's eyes. The mineral oil will not harm your poodle in any way and will protect its eyes against accidental contact with cleaning substances.

    • 5

Dilute some hydrogen peroxide using a formula of 10 parts water to one part hydrogen peroxide. Dip a soft cloth or cotton ball in the mixture and gently work it into the stained area around your poodle's eyes. Eventually the stain will lift, leaving your poodle's fur its natural color.

Dampen a soft cloth with warm water and clean the area around your poodle's eyes to remove any hydrogen peroxide and mineral oil that may remain. When cleaning, start near the eye and wipe away from it to avoid bringing any harmful substances into contact with the eye.
