Pomeranian Coat
-
The Pomeranian's double coat acts as insulation to regulate the dog's temperature. Owners sometimes choose to cut a Pomeranian's coat to keep the dog cool or reduce the need for grooming, but any cut to the dog's undercoat can cause permanent damage. Instead of cutting, groomers can strip the undercoat, which can reduce the grooming time for owners and keep the dog a little cooler during summer months. Regular grooming should include cutting in only a few areas. The fur in between the toes and on the pads should be trimmed regularly, as should the long hair in the ears to prevent infections and the hair around the anus to prevent feces from sticking to the long fur.
Short "Teddy Bear" Cut
-
The short cut sometimes called a teddy bear cut is a trim that keeps the hair one to two inches long all over the body. The cut makes brushing and grooming the shorter hair more manageable, while still showing off the fluff that makes the Pomeranian's coat so special. The hair around the face is usually cut in a circle that connects at the tip of the ear, similar to a West Highland Terrier cut.
Lion Cut
-
The Pomeranian's long, fluffy coat is well suited for a lion cut. The thick hair around the face and chest is an almost exact replica of a lion's mane. The hair on the body and legs is shaved while the hair on the chest, head and the tip of the tail is left long. While the lion cut is dramatic and also a bit humorous, it can do damage to the Pomeranian's coat. The coat may not grow back as thick or can grow in patches. It can also grow back much coarser than normal. Owners may need to keep up the lion cut if the coat responds poorly to shaving.
Pomeranian Trim
-
Pomeranians that are entered in dog show competitions must show off the full potential of the dog's coat. It is fluffed and brushed into a little fur ball. The Pomeranian trim is a simple shaping of the stray hairs into a series of half circles around the body. The chest hair is trimmed to form a half circle from the chin to the under belly. The legs are trimmed to resemble a half circle from the tail to the sock on the legs, and the tail is brushed onto the back and trimmed to complete the circle on the back.

Haircuts for Pomeranians
Along with bright eyes and a cute expression, the Pomeranian's fluffy coat is one of its most recognizable features. Pomeranians have a long, thick double coat of hair that sometimes resembles a fur ball. Pomeranian owners usually keep their dog's fur long, but there are some cuts that make grooming easier.
