How to Make Yorkie Topknots

Yorkshire terriers are a small breed of dog easily identifiable by their coats of long, shiny fur. It is important to keep your Yorkie well-groomed, as its coat can quickly become dirty or matted. Although topknots are not essential to grooming your Yorkie for cleanliness, they are an attractive finish to a well-maintained coat. Once completed, the topknot creates a small tuft of hair extending from the top of the head and is often decorated with a ribbon.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your thumb above one eye and your index finger above the other eye of the dog. Move your fingers back so they come together at the crown of its head, scooping up the hair between your fingers. This creates a triangular-shaped section of hair.

    • 2

Comb the gathered hair to untangle any knots and create a soft, clean section of hair.

    • 3

Pull the hairs together to form a ponytail over the middle of the gathered section of hair. Secure the ponytail with an elastic band, twisting the band and passing the ponytail through it additional times until the band is snug.

    • 4

Check that the band is not pulling too tightly on the hair near the dog's eyes, making it uncomfortable, and that a small poof is formed beneath the band. The band's weight will settle down slightly, causing the hair beneath it to puff out.

Place a clip-on or tie-on bow over the elastic band to add an eye-pleasing flair to the topknot.
