How to Give a Maltese a Haircut

The Maltese is a small dog weighing around four to seven pounds. This breed was originally from the Mediterranean island of Malta and bred strictly as a companion animal. The Maltese has a white, silky coat that owners keep long, especially if the dog will go to dog shows. However, Maltese dog owners often give their pets haircuts to keep the coat more manageable.

Instructions

    • 1

Brush your Maltese and comb out its hair, making sure to remove all the matting from the coat.

    • 2

Use the electric clipper with a No. 4 or No. 5 blade. Begin at the dog's back and clip the body in a downward motion.

    • 3

Use a No. 10 blade to clip the head and face. It is preferable to leave the ear hair long. Use the scissors to trim the hair around the mouth. The hair on the face and head should have a rounded look after trimming.

    • 4

Use the scissors to trim the leg fur, leaving the hair longer as you progress down the dog's legs.

    • 5

Bathe the dog with dog shampoo after grooming. After the dog is dry, trim off any stray hairs with the scissors.
