How to Cut a Dog's Mane

Cutting a dog's mane can be a difficult process if the dog is not calm. Owners need to train their dogs through practice to get used to the noise and vibration of the clippers. Once dogs realize that it is not a painful process, they will calm down, which makes grooming a much easier process. Cut your dog using clippers because it is dangerous to groom a dog with scissors because of unexpected movement.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a grooming noose around the dog's neck. The grooming noose helps you control the dog and prevent any large sudden movements. Let the noose hang loosely around the dog's neck.

    • 2

Brush the dog to remove all tangles and knots using a dog brush. Tangles get stuck in the clipper comb and make it difficult to groom the dog.

    • 3

Shampoo the dog's fur and dry the dog with a towel. Blow dry the dog's hair until it is completely dry. Lift the dog's fur to dry the skin to prevent irritation.

    • 4

Use a clipper with a 40 blade. Attach a 1½-inch comb to the clipper. Press the comb along the dog's body. This comb is used to shorten the hair all around the dog's body.

    • 5

Start at the neck of the dog and cut around the neck and the rest of the body. Cut with the grain of the fur.

    • 6

Hold your hand under your dog's ear to support it and cut the fur on top of the dog's ear. Hold the dog's paw and start towards the body down to the paws.

    • 7

Remove the 1½-inch clipper comb and replace it with a 2-inch clipper comb. Run the clipper around the dog's face and mouth. Your dog's mane is now cut.
