How to Make Bows for a Maltese

Create dog bows for your Maltese, a toy dog breed with long hair ideal for displaying small hair ornaments. Make clips for presenting your dog at shows or other special events, as well as those for everyday wear. Use lightweight materials to make the clips so they do not weigh down your dog's head or interfere with eyesight. Bows that are too small or too big can also get lost in your Maltese's hair or irritate it. Make a variety of bows from different fabrics to sell at craft fairs and festivals if desired.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut ribbon that is about 1-inch wide to 1 1/2-inches wide to about 2-inches to 2 1/2-inches long, depending on the size of your Maltese. Fold the ribbon in half and use a pen to mark a center line on the back of the ribbon.

    • 2

Place a thin strip of white glue down the center line you have created on the back of the ribbon. Use your finger and thumb to press the center together, which forms the basis of your bow tie. Keep your finger and thumb on the center mark and use your other hand to make folds in the fabric on either end of the ribbon.

Place a dab of hot glue on a proportionate button, round faux jewel or other embellishment. Place the embellishment on the front center of your bow, and reinforce the bow's center with a dab on hot glue on the back center of the ribbon. Allow it to dry for about 20 minutes.

Use hot glue to attach a snap clip to the back of the bow. Allow it to dry for about 10 minutes, then place the clip on your Maltese.
