How to Groom a Newfie

The Newfoundland, often nicknamed "Newfie," is considered a giant dog breed because of its massive size, which can reach over 100 lbs. Despite their imposing appearance, Newfoundlands are sweet and calm family dogs that are also used as water rescue dogs. The Newfoundland's coat is a thick and waterproof double coat that requires frequent grooming. The underlayers of the coat can easily get matted if not brushed often. Newfoundlands have a specific groom for the show ring, but all Newfies can benefit from basic grooming practices.

Instructions

    • 1

Part the dog's hair to expose the skin and brush the undercoat from the skin to the end of the hair vigorously over the entire coat.

    • 2

Use the hair scissors to trim the hair on the bottom of the paws to expose the foot pad, which helps the dog walk without slipping and keeps the paws clean and dry to prevent yeast and bacteria from growing.

    • 3

Trim the hair around the ears and under the ear flap with the hair scissors to keep hairs from trapping dirt and water that can enter the ear canal.

    • 4

Use the thinning shears to trim the hair on the chest, which is usually the longest hair on the body. If it gets too long, it can trap dirt.

    • 5

Brush the entire coat again to remove the cut hairs.
