Pomeranian Haircut Styles

It is only natural that as a long-haired Pomeranian pet's proud master, you are interested in the various possible Pom haircut styles. Pomeranian breed of dogs, known for their dainty looks and grace, owe it all to their hair grooming. A haircut style that best suits your pet is essential in getting the appearance right.
  1. Need for Styling

    • Trimming needs -- In the absence of frequent brushing, trimming becomes all the more necessary to avoid tangles caused by mats and knots

Tail needs -- A flat tail that is specific to the Pomeranian breed helps to differentiate it from the other Spitz descendants.

Hygienic needs -- The paws and the anus region of the hairy Pomeranian is shaved for health reasons and hygienic purposes.

    Types of Styles

    • Teddy Bear Style -- This cut causes a fluffy and furry appearance. In the teddy bear or puppy style haircut, the facial hair is trimmed and the haircut is continued around the face so as to give the head a circular-shaped look. The hair in the chest and the belly regions also get an even-trim to retain the hairy look. This style gives a stove- pipe appearance to the legs. This haircut style is the most expensive and also takes a longer time.

Lion-Cut Style -- In this style, the hair around the head is snipped in a circular way so as to give the appearance of a lion's mane. In this style, the hair in the lower legs and fluffy end of the tail is retained and the belly fur is cut to mimic the lion-like appearance.

Complete Shave -- Full or Complete shave is not a recommended Pomeranian haircut style as the breed is usually styled for a double-coated appearance. This style demands that extra care is taken to avoid painful skin aberrations and is only to be performed by well-trained groomers. Also, puppies should never get a full shave as it could affect their coat development.

    Preferred Style

    • Although there is no need to adhere to a specific haircut style, teddy cut and lion-cut style are the most preferred styles for Pomeranians. Owners who look for a full shave style for the dog's convenience in hot climatic conditions are advised to settle with styles that give skimpy-legged and trimmed-chest appearance.

    Advantages of Styling

    • Grooming - It is important to regularly trim your pet's hair for easier grooming. It also helps to avoid dirty fur and the consequent germ troubles.

Choices - One can choose any particular style or make variations in a style to suit both the owner's schedule and the dog's needs (some dogs develop sores and rashes in the exposed skin).
