How to Cut a Bichon Frise

The Bichon Frise is a small, white, puffy-haired dog that loves human company. Dating to the 1200s, the Bichon Frise is a descendant of the poodle and the Barbet Water Spaniel. They are intelligent, affectionate, bold and lively. Though small, they are not yappers. An American Kennel Club breed, there are two trims for the dog, the "puppy cut" and the "show cut." If you are showing the dog, you may have to take it to a professional groomer, but there are cuts you can do at home.

Instructions

    • 1

Bathe the Bichon at least once monthly, and be sure it is freshly bathed before attempting to cut.

    • 2

Brush the dog thoroughly after the bath and then comb the hair.

    • 3

Cut the hair short all over the body for the "puppy cut." You can use clippers for this cut.

    • 4

Let mustache, beard, tail and ear hair grow freely. Comb these areas out in flowing lines.

    • 5

Use the scissors only for a "show cut." Hold the shears so the blades point directly up. Using the entire length of the blade and opening the scissors primarily with the thumb, cut the hair to give the dog a full rounded appearance. AKC requires a minimum length of 2 inches and no maximum. French and Belgian clubs require at least 2 1/2 inches and a maximum of 4 inches.

    • 6

Scissor the show dog to emphasize the dark eyes, nose and mouth against the white hair.
