How to De-Flea a Pomeranian

Pomeranians are descended from the family of dogs known as Spitzes, who originated in Iceland and Lapland where they were sled dogs. Pomeranians received their name from a region in present-day Germany and Poland called Pomerania, where they were probably bred to their smaller size. Fleas can inhabit any dog, including those that primarily stay indoors. Removing fleas from a Pomeranian will take a lot of patience and effort due to the amount of hair they have, but it can be done.

Instructions

    • 1

Bathe the Pomeranian with a flea shampoo. Let the shampoo sit on the dog for a few minutes to kill as many live fleas as possible. The dog can also be submerged in the water for several minutes to drown fleas.

    • 2

Comb the Pomeranian with a flea comb. Have a dish of soapy water close to drown any live fleas. Put petroleum jelly on the comb. It will help live fleas adhere to the tines so they can be killed.

    • 3

Apply a topical flea medication. This will not kill fleas immediately, but it will start to kill the life cycle of the flea.

    • 4

Vacuum the whole house. Pay special attention to baseboards and places your Pomeranian frequents. Take the contents of the vacuum immediately to a garbage can outside. This will prevent live fleas from escaping.

    • 5

Launder pet bedding and other washable items your pet lays on or comes into contact with. These items need to be laundered on the hottest setting.

    • 6

Spray outdoor areas with a flea killer and repellent. This will help prevent your Pomeranian from being infested with fleas again.

    • 7

Add vitamins or household staples to your Pomeranian's food and water to boost immunity and repel fleas. This includes B vitamins, Omega 3, brewer's yeast, garlic and apple cider vinegar, just to name a few.

    • 8

Keep your Pomeranian healthy. Regular visits to the veterinarian will help to boost their immune system and repel fleas.
