How to Clean Vaseline Out of My Dog's Hair

Vaseline, a brand of petroleum jelly, is incredibly difficult to remove from a dog's hair, as it is not water soluble. Given its oil base, you must wash out Vaseline with a substance that absorbs grease. The best way to ensure that all Vaseline has been safely removed from your dog's fur is to use a combination of vegetable oil, cornstarch and liquid dish soap.

  • Vegetable oil
  • Cornstarch
  • Liquid dish soap with degreasing agent

      Apply vegetable oil liberally to your dog's fur wherever hair has come into contact with Vaseline. Once you've applies the oil, blot with paper towels. Repeat at least two to three times to remove as much of the Vaseline as you can.

      Apply cornstarch to the affected area. Let the cornstarch sit for at least five minutes. The application of the starch will absorb any excess oil left on the fur.

      Use a wide-toothed comb or dog brush to removed the majority of the cornstarch from your dog's fur.

      Lather your dog's fur thoroughly with a degreasing liquid dish soap. Be sure that the entire affected area has had soap applied.

      Rinse your dog until all Vaseline has been removed. Repeat if necessary.
