How to Comb a Bichon Frise

A bichon frise is a small purebred dog with a fluffy white coat. The dog requires regular, frequent grooming to avoid fur matting. If the bichon frise has matted fur, this can lead to sores in the skin, and you would eventually have to shave the dog. An important part of grooming this breed is daily brushing and combing, especially if your dog spends time outside playing. You could decrease that to a weekly routine if the dog spends more time indoors.

Hold the fur of the dog's head with your fingers where it meets the skin and brush the fur up in the opposite direction that it grows, using the slicker brush. Continue back to the neck and then over the entire body. Do not skip the legs.

Start combing at the head with a medium greyhound comb. Comb the hair back in the direction that it grows. Go slowly, feeling for any mats you missed while brushing. If you encounter any mats, switch back to the slicker brush and brush them out.

Comb the hair back in the opposite direction that it grows after you have checked for mats on the entire body. This will fluff the dog's fur and ensure that all the mats are removed.
