How to Deskunk a Dog

Pet owners don't need to see a skunk to know their dog has come in contact with one. Skunk spray is one of the most offensive smells you can imagine and it will permeate anything it comes in contact with. And it is one of the most difficult odors to remove. The spray soaks into the fur of the dog, requiring more than the usual bath to remove. There are commercial skunk odor removers available at most pet stores but you can also use home remedies to remove skunk odors from dogs.

Things You'll Need

  • 1-gallon bucket
  • 1 qt. 2 or 3 percent hydrogen peroxide
  • 1/4-cup baking soda
  • 1 tsp. liquid soap
  • Stiring stick
  • Hose
  • Soft-bristled scrub brush

Instructions

    • 1

Pour the hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and soap into the bucket. Stir the ingredients together.

    • 2

Rinse off the dog with the hose. Rinse all of its fur, regardless if the skunk sprayed all of it or not.

    • 3

Dip the scrub brush into the bucket. Scrub the dog's fur, including its legs and tail. Be careful not to get the mixture in the dog's eyes, ears or mouth. Let the mixture soak into the fur for 10 minutes.

Rinse the dog with the hose until all of the mixture is out of the fur.
