How to Bathe Westie Puppies

Westie dogs, also known as West Highland white terriers, are small to medium-size dogs with scruffy white fur and pointy upright ears. As puppies these dogs are very small and need extra care and attention. While you shouldn't bathe your westie puppy regularly, these little guys can get into trouble and show up with dirt all over them. Bathing your westie puppy should be done with care to ensure you don't harm your little pup.

Ensure the bathing area is warmed up for your westie. If need be, turn off fans and air conditioning before bathing, or place a small space heater in the area. Because of their small size and short fur, a westie pup can get chilly quickly, which can be detrimental to its health.

Run bath water so that it is warm but not scalding hot. Fill your tub so that when you place your westie in only its paws will be submerged in water. You don't want your westie to be covered in water. Use a cup to scoop up warm water in the tub and pour it slowly over the dog's body. Do not wet its face and hold the head up and pour water down the top of its head so that the water runs down its back.

Rub half a tablespoon of baby shampoo between your hands and run your hands over your westie's body, gently working it into a lather atop its fur. Do this for a minute and drain the tub as you do. Fill the tub again with some warm water and scoop up water and rinse your pup. Drain, fill and rinse one more time to ensure soap is removed.

Fill your cup with warm water and add a drop of baby shampoo. Mix with your finger then apply a little bit of the fluid around your puppy's face, rubbing away any tear stains. Fill a dropper with some warm water and squirt around your dog's face to rinse away any soap.

Remove the dog immediately and wrap it in a towel, then rub its body all over with the towel. Turn your blow dryer on a low speed and low warmth and blow dry your pup, holding it close as you do to keep it calm. Do this for two to three minutes until the fur is dry. Wash your pup no more than every two weeks.
