How to Cord a Poodle Coat

A poodle's fur is naturally curly, and if left alone it will form dense mats. The owner can tame these mats to form long, uniform cords. Since the dog's fur starts this process on its own, it is not difficult. The cords themselves require regular cleaning to prevent mildew formation or skin irritation. The fur's natural tendencies also mean that cording does not require any special equipment.

Instructions

    • 1

Stop brushing the poodle's coat. The fur will begin to naturally form mats if you stop brushing, which you can then manipulate into cords.

    • 2

Pull apart the mats so they are all a uniform thickness. Pull them apart, starting at the skin and working down the mat. Pull gently so you do not cause the dog pain.

Fill a spray bottle with lukewarm water. Mist the dog's coat once a week. Let the coat air dry. Continue to monitor the cords so they do not form larger mats. If you find any that are matting together, pull them apart.

Wash the cords once a week with a mild dog shampoo. Squeeze the soap into the cords instead of agitating the fur. Rinse the dog thoroughly, and blow dry the cords on low heat.
