How to Tie a Topknot on a Dog

If you have a dog with long hair, placing a topknot in its hair will keep the hair out of its eyes and face, allowing it to run and play more easily. Topknots are also commonly used on smaller breeds for dog shows and pageants. The topknot is a simple process requiring supplies you most likely have at home and takes just a few minutes. The topknot should last all day but may need to be redone if your dog is very active.

Instructions

    • 1

Comb your dog's hair thoroughly to remove any tangles or knots. Sit your dog at eye level, facing you, on a table or your lap.

    • 2

Gather your dogs hair from between the top of its eyes to the crown of its head, parting it away from the rest of the fur, and comb through it.

    • 3

Wrap a latex rubber band around the base of the gathered hair. Use a nonslip rubber band that will not pull too tightly on your dog's head and cause discomfort. Wrap a ribbon or bow around the base of the topknot to cover the rubber band.
