How to Groom Coton Puppies

The Coton de Tulear is a fluffy and gentle dog breed that is often known simply by the name of "Coton," which is French for cotton. Tulear is the name of a Madagascar city, as the African nation is the home of the breed. If you are interested in acquiring a Coton puppy, you need to learn how to properly groom the coats, which are known for light, cotton-like textures. When Cotons are puppies, the coats are significantly easier to groom compared to adulthood.

Instructions

Brush your Coton's coat extensively once per day. When your Coton is a young puppy, once daily should suffice, until roughly eight months of age. Begin grooming the puppy as soon as possible. The quicker it gets acquainted with the procedure, the easier and more relaxed it will be for the both of you.

Spray a small amount of water or spray conditioner onto the coat so that it gets slightly damp, as dry coats can lead to breakage and damage of the hair. Put a small amount of water or grooming conditioning spray directly on the pin brush to make brushing quicker and smoother, as well. Place your puppy on its side and move down as you brush (using a pin brush). Focus on parts of the body that experience tangling and knotting frequently, including the ear, feet, stomach and thigh area.

Remove matting, knotting and tangling. If you find any knots, tangles or mats in your puppy's coat, using your fingers, carefully and steadily pull the hairs away from each other. Abstain from just yanking the knots out in one swift pull.

Praise your Coton puppy enthusiastically for good behavior as you groom its coat. Also, make sure to provide it with a healthy treat as a reward when you are done.
