How to Shave a Pomeranian for the Summer

Pomeranians don't require clipping in the hotter months, but you may wish to shorten the fur for a stylish seasonal hairdo. Because their fur helps protect their skin from the sun and heat, it's best to leave at least an inch of fur; as opposed to shaving them bald. The Pomeranian's coat may not grow back to its original condition, and it can look somewhat choppy when freshly clipped, so seriously consider a standard trim and professional grooming, before you reach for the clippers.

Instructions

    • 1

Bathe the dog and squeeze excess water from the hair with a towel. Blow it dry with a hairdryer or continue toweling it, until the hair is completely dry. Then brush it with a slicker brush.

    • 2

Select a blade attachment for the clippers, keeping in mind that longer is better.

    • 3

Clip the hair in a straight line from the base of the neck to the base of the tail. Continue clipping the hair in this direction on both sides of the freshly shaved line, until you reach the stomach.

    • 4

Hold its front feet in your free hand and lift, so the dog stands on its hind legs. Clip the hair in a straight line from the bottom of its chest to the hind legs.

    • 5

Clip in a downward direction from the shoulders and hips to trim the legs, stopping just past the halfway point, to leave its natural boots. Lift the tail when clipping the hind legs and trim around the anus, using caution not to touch it with the blade.

    • 6

Run a slightly longer blade attachment from the back of the head and sides of the neck to the body to blend it. Use the same attachment toward the center or tip of the tail, if desired.

    • 7

Hold the tips of the ears with your thumb and forefinger, and trim an arc above the tips with blunt-nosed scissors. Hold each side of the ear between your index and middle finger to safely trim the edges.

    • 8

Trim a circle around each foot, using caution not to cut into the nails, and trim excess hairs from between the paw pads with a short clipper blade.
