How to Groom a Lab Retriever

Labrador retrievers are among the most popular dog breeds. They are loving and friendly, making them excellent family dogs that are good with children. While Labs are large dogs, keeping them well-groomed and healthy need not be intimidating. With a little know-how, you can have a well-maintained Lab that may even look forward to bath time. Simplifying the process is the fact that Labradors require no clipping or shaving and very little bathing. Shedding can be kept under control by daily brushing.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a bathtub with water, making certain the temperature is warm, but not hot. Carefully place the dog in the tub, and thoroughly wet the dog's coat from head to tail. A large plastic cup works well.

    • 2

Massage the dog's coat with either your fingers or a special rubber tool found at pet shops. This will help loosen hair and dead skin cells. After working through the entire coat in this manner, apply a high-quality dog shampoo and work it into the coat. Start at the head, being careful to avoid getting soap in the Lab's eyes or ears.

    • 3

Thoroughly rinse the shampoo out, starting at the head and working your way down. Be certain to remove all of the lather. Use more water from the tap if the water in the tub is too soapy.

    • 4

Remove the dog from the water and place it on a layer of thick towels. Carefully pat dry. Pay special attention to drying the face, eyes and ears.

    • 5

Dry the coat using a hair dryer on the low heat setting. Run your fingers through the coat while drying, gently lifting the hair and working against the direction of growth. Brush the coat to complete the job.
