How to Make a Grooming Arm

Grooming arms are used by pet groomers to secure the animal on the table during brushing, trimming or shaving. They are typically designed for use with dogs, although some cats may be groomed using a grooming arm designed for a small dog. This grooming arm is designed to be positioned on the floor next to a stationary, stable table, but can be attached to the table using hand clamps.

  • Vice

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the conduit elbow like the letter L. Clamp the horizontal part of the conduit elbow in the vice. Mark a spot about 2 inches from the end and drill a 1/4-inch hole. Screw the threaded eye bolt into the hole and tighten it.

    • 2

Determine the length needed for your grooming arm. Large dogs need about 4 feet of arm above the table while medium dogs need 40 inches. Many small dogs can be groomed with only 30 inches of grooming arm above the table. Add the table height to this to reach the length necessary for your arm. Most tables are around 30 inches high. Don't forget that the conduit elbow will add 6 to 8 inches to the height.

    • 3

Cut the straight conduit to the necessary length for your table using a hack saw.

    • 4

Slide the coupler on the elbow conduit and tighten the screws. Tighten the other side onto the straight conduit.

    • 5

Remove the lock nut ring on the connector and put this into the center hole of the outlet cover. Flip the cover over, and tighten with the lock nut ring.

    • 6

Insert the trimmed end of the straight conduit into the connector. Tighten the set screws.

    • 7

Screw the grooming arm to the ground using the pre-drilled holes on the outlet cover. If you want to use hand clamps to attach the arm to the table, simply start with a shorter straight conduit pipe or trim 30 inches from the bottom of the pipe before attaching the base.
