Instructions
Prepare for the bath before you bring your dog into the bathroom. This includes setting out the dog shampoo, dog conditioner, a rubber scrub brush and two to three large towels.
Lead your dog into the bathroom on a leash. Place a dog treat inside the bathtub to encourage your bullmastiff to enter. Once inside, leave the leash and collar on if the dog is prone to jumping out of the tub. Otherwise, remove the leash and collar if your dog will sit still during bath time.
Wet the dog's body, including carefully spraying the face, with warm water. Do not plug up the bathtub because this will cause a pool of soapy water that the dog will drink and may cause it to become ill.
Lather up the dog's fur with a dog shampoo. Do not use human shampoo as this will cause an allergic reaction in several dogs. Start from the dog's head and move toward its tail. Work the shampoo into all of the dog's fur, paying attention to avoid getting it into the bullmastiff's nose, eyes, mouth or ears.
Rinse off all the shampoo and any loose hair from the dog's fur. Continue to rinse until all of the shampoo is removed.
Brush the dog's coat with a rubber dog brush. Begin at the dog's head and work toward its tail to remove any remaining loose fur.
Turn off the water, and while the dog is still in the tub, wet a cotton swab with water. Clean the bullmastiff's facial wrinkles, or furrows, with the cotton swab.
Lay a towel onto the ground and set a treat on it. This will prompt the dog to jump out of the bathtub and onto the towel.
Spray the bullmastiff's fur with a light coating of dog final coat conditioner. Work the conditioner into the dog's wet coat with a rubber brush. This will provide a shine to the dog's coat, and some varieties of conditioner will also help reduce shedding.
Dry off the dog with a second and third large towel. Remove as much of the excess water as possible and allow the dog to shake to naturally remove the rest. Use a blow dryer on a low setting to dry off the dog, if it will stand for it.
Move the dog into a warm, draft-free area to finish drying.
