How to Groom a Pomapoo

"Pomapoo" is a name given to a breed of dog that is a mix between Pomeranian and poodle. These are sometimes referred to as "designer dogs," but they are simply mixed breeds bred for their size, unusual look and sweet nature. Often toy in size, pomapoos typically weigh less than 15 pounds and are less than 8 inches in height. Grooming a pomapoo will largely depend on which side of the breed is more prominent, the Pomeranian or the poodle.

Keep a regular bathing routine. Before bathing, brush thoroughly to check for fleas and ticks as well as to prepare the hair for bathing. If your dog has a long, straight coat, you can bathe as often as twice a week, although once a month will typically suffice, especially if the dog is not left outside alone very often. For dogs with curly hair, the same bath schedule applies, but more frequent brushing is recommended.

Brush your pomapoo at least once a week. For dogs that have the long, fluffy coat of a Pomeranian, use a steel brush to remove tangles and prevent matting. For dogs with the more wiry, curly coat of a poodle, use a softer-bristled brush to prevent pulling the dog's hair as you groom it.

Trim nails at least once a month or as needed. They should be kept short so they do not crack or become painful for the dog to walk on. Make cuts in small increments on the nail so you avoid cutting the quick. If you do cut to the quick, apply pressure to the nail to stop the bleeding. If bleeding persists, take the dog for veterinary assistance.

Perform a "sanitary trim" around the dog's reproductive areas to keep them trim and neat. This will prevent waste from matting into the hair. If you are unsure how your dog will behave during the cutting process, you may want to take it to a professional grooming service. Otherwise, hold the pomapoo still while cutting or clipping the area with gentle cutting tools. Also trim around the paw pads to stop excess hair from collecting on the dog's foot.

Brush your dog's teeth with every bath or more often if required. Pomeranians have notoriously hard-to-maintain teeth, so regular maintenance is required to ensure your dog's health. During regular vet checkups, also have the dog's teeth checked.
